Many Christians just assume that psalmists are prophets, but not necessarily.  Many times the two are often confused because of the high level of praise and worship that the psalmist can enter in to in order to lead the congregation. Psalmists have the divine enablement to see and retrieve heavenly appearances and sounds.  However, this does not necessarily make them prophets.  The intercessor and the disciplined prayer warrior are also on occasion able to reach such heights in the spirit.   Again, this does not equate to the Office of the Prophet.

Psalmists, although prophetic in nature, are usually relegated to the realm of music. There are able to hear and sing the new songs of the spirit.  These qualities enable the congregation to flow in a greater prophetic spiritual dimension.  In addition to being able to soar into the spirit to see and hear heavenly things and exhibit the obvious musical gifting, a psalmist may often minister in warfare, healing, love songs to God or a poetic, rhyming vein.

O sing unto the Lord a new song and sing unto the Lord , all the earth.” – Psa 96.1

A Psalm. O sing unto the Lord a new song, for he hath done marvellous things: His right hand, and His Holy arm, hath gotteen Him the victory.” – Psa 98.1

Praise ye the Lord. Sing unto the Lord a new song, and His praise in the congregation of saints.” – 149.1

Some psalmists may also be prophets.  One definition of prophet is Poet! Need I say more?  When this is the case, their anointing embodies all of the attributes and traits of the Office of Prophet. However, they are not limited to the area of music. The Office of the Prophet is just that.  It is an ‘office’ where a psalmist simply has an anointing. An ‘office’ is a divine governmental assignment where an anointing is a supernatural ability given to accomplish a specific task.

An interesting note to consider:  Stop to consider whether someone is serving the Lord with the New Creation spirit of God or not. God’s innate and predestined abilities can be recognized by believers operating in discernment and a Spirit of Truth.  When we examine secular music artists, upon scrutiny, you may hear abilities, giftings, and callings. And yes, there may even be an anointing that smacks of the psalmists characteristics. We are not simply speaking of a talented or professional musician playing well.  The prophetic ear with discernment can the distinct sound of heaven regardless of whom it may come through.  If God can use Balaam’s ass (Num 22:28-30) to speak to him then surely God can use secular music artists to deliver an occasional anointed song to speak to a lost generation.

Since one definition of a prophet is poet, we have a duty to pray for the misguided Hip-Hop performers and secular artists who rhyme and rap. Many of them were called to be psalmists or prophets.  However, the enemy was able to successfully pull them off course and pervert their divine purpose.  Their role, destiny, and pathway in the realm of musical influence was originally designed to be directed towards the House of God. Believe God for revival.  Pray unto God that He will lead them and their constituents into the Kingdom.

Only the Word of God can change someone’s heart.  How can they hear without a preacher?  Share the Word of God and take the time to teach it.  Never assume that because someone may be young that they don’t understand what you are saying.

“How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?
“- Rom 10:14

Many of our children are listening and internalizing the dark and negative messages of music. As a result, the enemy has had a field day destroying the ‘future promise lands’ of our children through the impartation of ‘demonic music .  As a body, we need to spend a concerted effort in prayer for the souls of those that are in the music industry.  Let us stand in the gap with our prophetic decrees and declarations that these men and women will serve the True and Living God.

“And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none.
“- Eze 22:30
